MEET CHEF STEVE
Growing up in a Polish household, food was always a time of family and fellowship. His family often ate dinner together as food was often the focal point around holidays and gatherings. The initial spark for the culinary world began when he would frequently help in the kitchen making small things, filling pierogi, etc. A small fire was ignited when he took a small food class in middle school, learning how to make smoothies and stir fried veggies. The flames were fanned when in high school Steve took a foods class, where he was instructed by a previous restaurant owner on how to measure ingredients and use a knife. In this class cookies and quick foods were the vessel by which basic techniques were taught. At age 17 Steve found work at Friendly’s scooping ice cream. After a short while was transferred to the grill side, where he became a trainer. This is where the passion became a reality. Playing sports taught him to get better every day. He fell in love with the hustle and bustle of the kitchen. The high stress and intense environment provided an avenue to learn and develop the basic skills of cooking, such as time management, organization, and communication. At the age of 20, Steve found employment as a line cook at Tucker’s Restaurant in Southwick, MA. Learning skills from active professionals in the culinary field, Steve developed into a professional chef without a culinary degree. Here he learned how to work with raw ingredients, and create foods not pre-packaged in bags and deep fried. His passion to work in the culinary field came from the concept that there is a near endless amount of foods, techniques, and cuisines to learn. Currently Steve is pursuing a Masters of Science in Exercise Physiology from Springfield College. The combination of health and culinary allow him to teach the skills and techniques to make healthy food taste good, therefore encouraging others to make healthy decisions.
